I was on Facebook and as an avid Arty McGoo follower . . . I mean stalker . . . I mean admirer. I noticed it was her Cookie-nniversary. She so nicely put up her first attempt at cookies and I couldn't help myself but be jealous . . . I mean pleasantly surprised . . . I mean it lacked the crating and oozing characteristics of my own. I thought, just for fun and to celebrate a great cookie inspiration . . . If you have a photo of the 1st cookie that "started it all!", I'm sure we would love to see it

I will start - The year was 2010 and I was being cheap about my son's 1st birthday. I had no interest in paying a bakery for cookies that I was sure I would be able to make. Plus I needed the practice, in case I should be invited to these so-called " Christmas Cookie Exchange"s. Needless to say, after waging war on royal icing with a ziplock bag and a knife, I decided maybe it best I never go to one of the exchanges. (Well that, and I never have been invited.)

Tag, you are all it!

I'll play!  I have two pictures to show everyone - the snowflakes on the left were done in December of 2001!  I went to a Southern Living Home party and bought this huge copper snowflake cookie cutter.  That cutter started it all!  It came with a recipe for cut-out cookies which is still what I use today (with a little tweaking).  The Halloween cookies on the right were done in October 2002.  No bags and tips here...I simply spooned the royal icing on from a bowl and spread it around with an offset spatula.  I am sure I did cookies here and there, but I didn't really get into it steady until the fall of 2009 when my oldest started preschool.

I started cookie decorating in 2012. When I found a cookie decorating book in a bookstore, I just thought I could do this for my older daughter's birthday. I made RI barbie cupcake toppers and cookies. I don't understand why I got those strange colours for butterflies! But anyway since then I have been hooked and practicing. The pink and purple birthday cookies are what I made for my daughters' friend's birthday two months after that.

Around Valentines day 2014, I saw a picture of a cookie Sugarbelle posted. Just the  Christmas before, I was slapping butter cream icing and sprinkles on the cookies and calling them decorated! They were delicious but not so pretty! Lol, this doesn't look much better but I tried! Did a cookie that was way beyond my capabilities.

6 months later, much improved! Practice and patience!

This was my first ever attempt (not the 2nd or 3rd really really first) lol, we had moved house and I was hosted a house warming party. It was March 2012 and I was surfing Pinterest for "something different" for the party, my theme was pink and green (what on earth made me think electric at the time was a good idea?). As most of us do I found Sugarbelle's blog, she made it look sooooo easy! Needless to say I made cupcakes instead and vowed to figure out this thing called cookie decorating for my next party!

I was always a "slap a little buttercream and sprinkles on it" kind of cookie decorator until a friend asked for a cookie bouquet for her husband for Valentine's Day.  Packaging was hard since the buttercream never really hardened completely.  I decided that I needed to try RI and ordered Julia's Ultimate Cookie book.  When it arrived, I realized I was way out of my skill/comfort level and started the search that led to this amazing community.

I love it too! Fortunately, my first cookies were done well before digital camera days, and I can find nary a photo of any around here to scan!

Awesome topic idea! You all have no idea how much better this is making me feel. I will admit, that these aren't actually my very first cookies...I took a little workshop one summer evening from a friend and made a few cookies there, but there is no photographic evidence. I ate them before anyone could take pictures because they were so truly awful. It took me 6 months to get up the courage to do some more, and these are a big improvement believe me! I didn't have the right kind of food colouring either, so they are pink stockings instead of the red ones I had envisioned! LOL

  • Christmas stockings: First solo attempt at cookies!

My Cookie Journey began in 2012...I wanted to make some yummy and pretty Christmas cookies. Thanks to Sugabelle, I nailed the yummy, but the pretty cookies...that took a little time to get the hang of. I have been hooked ever since. All I can say about these beauties is Wow!! I have come along way...With these I hadn't even tried RI yet. I made a funky buttercream that was splotchy, and the runniest glaze, I obviously did not follow a recipe for icing...lol. I still love them though. They tasted so good!!

These are my sugar cookies that I made for the first time ever last year for my daughter's birthday

They took forever to complete because I had no decorating supplies-I didn't own any icing tips so I used a paint brush to paint each individual colour

Now I am completely hooked and own too many tips and cutters to count!

  • First EVER attempt: June 2013

Oh I LOVE this topic!!!!

I started being a "cookieaholic" last Christmas (December 2013). I decided that, since I want to save some money for Christmas presents, cookies could have been a perfect solution... so I started searching on internet how to make them. My very first attempt refused to be photographed and went directly in the trash itself!! Then I basically did a one-week full imersion in videos and blogs and everything that could help me do something worth of being called decorated cookies.... and here the result!

Please be aware that if the decoration are passable... I had ginormous issues with the dough that - of  course - came out totally wrong!!!!

But it was love at first bite... and here I am 10 mont later, totally in love with this art!!!

Please, note the beautiful "Black" background... yep, after 10 months I think I'm also better in taking pics

Just joined this forum after spending hours watching Julia's YT channel and reading some posts here. I'm late on this post but really wanted to share my first attempt at icing a cookie (ever!). This is for my daughter's Christening this coming weekend.

Wow - they look fantastic. Can't believe they're a first attempt!

P.S. Thanks for tuning into my channel. Really appreciated!

This was my first attempt at decorating sugar cookies. They were mostly inspired by Sugarbelle.  I was very proud and am still proud of these cookies.  It is funny, there are some cookies that I am pretty good at making and all the rest are just too challenging. I keep challenging myself, but I have my favorites (the ones that are easier for me).
