I was sick for eight of the nine months I was pregnant with my son. When it came time to deliver him, the obstetrics unit was full of unusual cases that night and it was many hours before I could be transferred to a room after laboring all day. It had been more than thirty-six hours since I'd had anything to eat. Thanks to perpetual morning sickness, food didn't taste good either. The cafeteria was closed as were all the restaurants surrounding the hospital by the time I got settled in my room past midnight. My nurse was able to track down some Oreos in a vending machine and a carton of milk. They were the BEST Oreos I had ever eaten as the ph levels in my mouth returned to normal and my blood sugar level came up again. I always packed Oreos in my hospital bag for the birth of the rest of my children.
