I've been asked on a few occasions so here goes: I don't use an outline because I feel too restricted.  I'm probably breaking a lot of painting "rules", but I just put down some color and see where things go. I start with a general idea and use several photos for reference points, but posture can change and things evolve. Some portraits take me a couple of hours, some can take two days. I usually take a short break (eye strain) and come back and see what I might like to change.  I do respect artists who can create beautiful work using a projector or outline; I choose freehand because that's how I work best. Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for posting this, Kristi. I don't think that you broke many painting rules. To my laymen eyes it looks exactly like my sister approaches her oil paintings. It needs a keen understanding of colors and complex layers to do what you do with your cookies. If I could paint like that, I would switch to something more lasting than dough

Thank you, Leoni.

This cookie is amazing, that's important! I use the same method you use: freehand and heart! Such a beautiful David Bowie tribute

Thank you so much, Evelin <3 I adore your work.

I love looking at work in progress and I could watch for hours somebody decorating or painting. I couldn't do something like this even using an outline or a projector... and if we talk about colors...

I think you made this portrait really yours using freehand. The best tribute.

Thank you, Manu. I had planned to make a video slideshow, but it didn't work out the way I wanted so I went with a collage. I can see the value in a projector especially for mass production cookies that are all the same, but I don't accept those types of orders and I'd go insane having to stay in the lines. Sometimes I change my mind mid-project and adjust the expression. This was made for a friend, but I'm lucky my clients allow me so much freedom.

All of this because you are truly an artist and your cookies and cakes are not mass production but one of a kind!

Talking about work in progress and video slideshow, did you try to use an app, to edit videos, called Splice? It works out very well. It is all about fraction of seconds and add the right music... But with Bowie you can't go wrong!!! I made a work in progress video slideshow... sooner or later I will post it... It is about the cookie of the challenge of the roses, it was so colorful that I used cancan as a "soundtrack"... But too loud for me (colors and music).

Thank you, that's very kind. I'd love to see your slideshow. I use a PC with windows 7 but I'll check out Splice.
