Practice Bakes Challenge #37 Water

A couple of years ago there were several island cakes made on YouTube using gelatin. I always wanted to make a cake but it never happened. However, I was thinking of a cookie because it is smaller. When I looked through the list of challenges, and challenge #37 water, this immediately came to my mind.

I first cut a circle cookie dough and piled small mounds of cookie dough to resemble islands (Next time I would make it a little higher). After the cookie baked and cooked, I used melted chocolate to brush the top of the cookies (I used milk chocolate as that’s what I had). But, I was not happy I wanted the mountains to be darker. So I brushed with black gel food color mixed with vodka. After drying I painted the bottom and sides of the cookie with white gel color. I let it dry.

For the water, I used Agar agar instead of gelatin. I did not want to put the cookie in the fridge as it might soften it. Agar agar sets at room temperature.

I wrapped the cookie with acetate and covered the bottom with cling wrap. Then I poured the cooled agar agar (it firms up quickly). The green on the islands are crushed cookies colored in green. The sand around the islands are semolina.

My photo does not do justice, the sides of the cookie looks like the bottom of the ocean. Next time will use a lighter blue. Coming from an island I love everything island. Thank you Christine @Sweet Prodigy and Julia @Julia M. Usher for giving this opportunity to practice techniques.

Nice work! It's so hard to photograph things that are sheer and/or reflective (I struggled with the same on the bees' wings for my recent stencil release), but your water looks very water-like to me!

These are just wonderful my dear Zeena @Zeena!! As always, your work is so well done and really unique. I know what you mean about not making a island cakes like what you saw on YouTube LOL. I decorated cakes many, many years ago and definitely prefer working with cookies!!! SO much smaller, right? Awesome work my dear cookie friend ❤️❤️❤️ Hugs...
