I love all the crackle icing designs that are being posted; they are just beautiful. When I was reviewing the technique I learned that it is just cornstarch and white coloring. Are people eating these designs? Or are they just for looks? Also, are there any other (more tasty) ways to create this look?

Hi Heidi,
At the moment, I only have used this technique just for looks...To be honest, I think they are not the best option for enjoy eating them (royal icing tastes much better, of course!)
What do you think about trying some non oil-based food flavouring in order to improve the taste?
Great question. Anxious to hear what others have to say about it.
I worried about the same. My daughter had some kind of alergy only after she ate cookies decorated like that. But not me. I am new and I have not practice so much this but I am looking for something without using so many paints.
You can generate that effect easily with a crackle template and an airbrush. http://www.amazon.com/Prima-Ma...rds=Crackle+template

Just today I see that Montreal Confections did a YouTube video on this using an egg wash with white color before baking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na7383DyzwI

I used a bit of vodka ,which had vanilla beans soaking in it ,with some super white powder color -lightly painted this mixture over the unbaked cookie and the results were not only gorgeous but tasty.
