I had something strange happen to some cookies. I decorated 3 dz cookies. I made the icing the same as I normally do. Flooded them the same as usual. I dry them in a dehydrator. I then decorated and airbrushed pearl over them. Then I let them dry again. I had some extra decorated cookies left, so bonus for me to try. When I broke the cookie in half, it was like a “top” layer of icing came off. And the icing on the cookie felt more like dust. What is going on? The only thing different is I froze the cookies prior to icing but they were thawed out real well. And I airbrushed. Any idea what might have caused this?

Hi, SusieC, Congrats on making your first post. I look forward to many more to come!
Is it hard on the outside?
Yep. I wished I would have taken a picture.

Me too. Sounds like it may have been going on for a while or happen to others and not know it.
Sounds like you dried them too long, and the icing "sheeted" off. Though hard to say without a picture or being there.
Is that even a thing? Drying too long? That's a possibility because I did have them in the dehydrator longer than what I usually do. I think my dad might still have a cookie so I'm going to go over there and take a picture.

Yes, definitely. I've had the entire layer of icing come off cookies in big "sheets" (which is why I call it "sheeting") when I've stored cookies very long under dry conditions. Same thing can happen with over-dehydrating.
