Hello, these were inspired by my backyard, whilst it is officially winter here my Japanese maple tree has only just turned and with the storm last week my pavers are covered in beautifully colours leaves.
I used a firm impression mat for the stepping stones, however, I think if I were to do this again I would put a very thin layer of royal icing on the mat first to easily work out any bubbles and then put on the biscuits - hope that makes sense. Also having the mat on the the top made the drying very slow so I would put the biscuits on the top next time.
The leaves were a silicone impression mat that I would use for fondant. I think they worked well however using the dusts on a porous surface really didn't work as well as I would have like - oh well, just means I need to play more!!
Neat - I really like how the leaves (and their dusted color) turned out. The same technique would be great for making dinosaur or animal footprints!
Thank you. Yes definitely, my original idea was foot prints but I just ran out of time to play (darn those paying orders - lol). But definitely a lot of ideas to play with.
These are fantastic textures! The stepping stones and the leaf impressions look very realistic. I especially love how you used shading in between the stones to create depth and dimension. I also like the coloring and fine texture of the embossed leaves. As far as any "defects" go, I don't see flaws, I see character. Did you find that the icing separated easily from the firm impression mat without sticking? Also, I would love to know what consistency of icing you use?

Hi, Thank you for your comments. Sorry forgot to mention I used flood consistency. Yes the impression mat was VERY lightly oiled with veg shortening and I left it for 48hrs before fully taking it off as at the 24hr period it was still a little moist, but it came off with no issue at all.
Oh, now I know why mines has bubbles, as you say thin layer of royal icing on the mat first, that's a good idea, I should try that next time. Thank you for sharing that with us.
