NEW! Tutorials Now Classified By Level - Definitions Here!

Hey, all. Based on the recent feedback on our first birthday giveaway post, we're making some changes, including classifying project tutorials (tutorials designed to make a certain cookie) by level. You can read all about the other changes here.

After some discussion this week, the contributors team settled on the following definitions for levels:

  • Beginner – cookie design uses 1 or 2 primary techniques that are relatively easy (i.e., outlining, flooding, wet on wet), and/or involves only 2 to 3 steps
  • Intermediate – cookie design uses 3 or 4 techniques, and/or involves 4 to 5 steps
  • Advanced – cookie design uses 5 or more techniques (or new or more advanced ones, like painting, needlepoint, lace work, 3-D construction), and involves more than 5 steps

We've already classified all existing project tutorials using this basic scheme, and will classify all future ones as well. The aim, of course, is to make it easier for you to find tutorials suited to your skill level. (Please recognize that it is sometimes hard to apply definitions literally word for word, so some judgment calls may be involved in our classifications. But we will do our best! )

Technique tutorials (like "how to do needlepoint" or "how to airbrush") will also be classified in the next week or so, with beginner techniques generally being building-block ones (like topcoating, flooding, or wet on wet), and advanced techniques being ones that might require more practice, more control, or special equipment (like needlepoint or painting). Again, the classifications may be a little subjective, but that's the nature of the beast, so to speak.

Each project will have a banner (just under the main photo in the tutorial) that signals the level. They are all variations on this general theme:

You can also quickly jump to all tutorials of a certain level by clicking on the relevant blog collection (i.e., Project Tutorials - Beginner Cookies, etc.) in the blog. Three new project collections (one related to each level) and a master project collection (with all project tutorials) were added this week. You can access them from the "Blog Collections" area on the right side of any page in the blog.

More advanced tutorials are also in the works! Ta ta!

How do I find tutorials? I do not see it listed on the site menu?

Our tutorials always get posted to the blog - so just click on "Blog" and then look under "Blog Collections" to the right of the page. You'll see several tutorial collections in that area (beginner tutorials, intermediate tutorials, etc.), but all of them are located under the collection called "Project and Technique Tutorials - All". You can also find quick links to all tutorials on the right side of all "Resources" and "Contributors" pages. Hope this helps.
