Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is two-day celebration spanning September 15 and 16, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican Army's win over the French Empire in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. But over time, here in the US anyway, it's become a broader celebration of Mexican-American culture. (Never thought you'd get a history lesson here on Cookie Connection, did you? 
)
In cookies, this celebration most often manifests itself in high-color fiesta sets featuring intricately "embroidered" floral dresses, sombreros, papel picado, piñatas, and, of course, the Mexican flag. And, in keeping with the fiesta mood, you might even find a margarita cookie or two tossed in! There is no clearer evidence of this cookie phenom than in this week's hot list*. It's got everything I mentioned and more, all in an eye-popping palette dominated by lime green, orange, teal, and hot pink! It's bright, cheerful, and a guaranteed Saturday morning pick-me-up!
