Saturday Spotlight: Top 10 Cookies (and New Year's Cookie Resolutions!)

I love the stretch between Christmas and New Year's Day. It's a time when it seems as though the holiday pressure has receded but the celebratory atmosphere remains. At my house, all of the guests have departed, and I'm trying to harness every remaining celebratory vibe to make fun plans for the upcoming year.

In the cookie decorating department, I'm hoping to shake things up a bit. I want to experiment more with different techniques and colors. However, I also don't want to lose ground in those areas where I have improved over the past year. Developing a personalized combination of style, technique, and color is definitely at the top of my New Year's resolutions.

Luckily for me (and hopefully for you too!), this week's hot list* is filled with so much inspiration. We are very fortunate to have so many talented artists who share their creations, often with instructions and process information. I can assure you that my project list for next year is already quite lengthy as a result!

The cookies featured in this Spotlight are the top-trending cookies for this week that were posted this year. Though all have some type of Christmas theme, each offers a terrific example of technique, artistry, or composition. Accordingly, I'm going to refrain from my usual commentary. Each of these photos speaks for itself.

This Spotlight is a wonderful end to what has been an incredible year of sharing and inspiration. Congratulations to @Cláudia Dmytriw Pichek, @Dora, @Kelly Russell, @Zeena, @Bożena Aleksandrow, @Di Art Sweets, @Evelindecora, @Julia M. Usher, and @Dita for being featured this week. And a huge thank-you to all who continue to make us such a wonderful cookie community!

Before I leave you to enjoy the ringing in of 2024, I'd love to hear your New Year's resolutions, especially those in the cookie category! I've shared mine, so please share yours below!

Happy, happy New Year to all!

* As a reminder, a word about how the rankings are determined: The rankings are not at all subjective. In fact, they are determined essentially by you, our members, and the activity (number of views, likes, and comments) you've bestowed on each photo. The site uses a top-secret algorithm that weighs these various factors to determine which photos are trending most quickly (i.e., are the "hottest") over specified periods of time. As such, the hot list at the time of this announcement may look a little different a few hours or a day from now as more photos are added to the site.

So that no one has an unfair advantage in making it onto a hot list, the algorithm is secret even to site administrators. Only our platform developers know the code, which has been exhaustively tested by those developers and Cookie Connection staff.

All photos shown here are the courtesy (and copyright) of the designers listed.

To check out our other hot lists, at any time of day, visit our Hot Spot, also found in the site's main navigation line.

Wonderful roundup, @LisaF! I want to echo your remarks and thank everyone for contributing so thoughtfully to Cookie Connection this year. Without your collective posts, comments, and other input, Cookie Connection wouldn't be the beautiful, info-rich place that it continues to be! ❤️

Also, thanks to Lisa for bringing up the topic of resolutions - another opportunity for sharing and learning, which I love to do! So I'll break the ice with some of mine! Long story short, expect to see lots of changes from me in 2024. I'll be the first to admit that 2023 was a rough year for me, overburdened as I've become with admin and other unrewarding tasks in many areas of my work. So, I'll be shedding some of those albatrosses, starting later in January with a rather large announcement about a shift in my cookie business. My ultimate goal is to free up more time to create with an uncluttered, less preoccupied mind, and unfettered by business obligations that don't bring me as much joy as they should.

I also want to find more ways to reward those who work tirelessly (for free) for this site. It's a great place (IMO) but too much of a great thing can also cause burnout, as I well know. And I don't wish that on any of my site contributors. I've already put some wheels in motion in this area - namely charging a nominal fee for challenge demos and sharing some of those proceeds with challenge contributors through a new affiliate system. Earlier this year, Lisa and I also started job-sharing the Spotlight-writing task, which has been a tremendous help to me, freeing me up to handle other important Cookie Connection and work activities. (Again, thank you, Lisa!)

Just today, I also released a limited-edition cookie calendar, the proceeds from which will help to offset the increasing technical costs of maintaining this site. If you haven't seen my post about it, please check it out. And, if you have other ideas for making Cookie Connection a better place, I hope to hear from you either here in the comments or via email. I'll do my best to put the best of your suggestions in place.

Okay, I've talked your ears off , so I'll leave you with one final message: Happy New Year, everyone! May your 2024 be peaceful, prosperous, and full of incredible cookies!

On another note . . . Honorees, I will send your "I was featured" badges a bit later (on Saturday night, likely after 5 pm central time), so be sure to check your private messages here on the site after that time.

I should add a huge thank-you to every contributor to this site. Without their hard work, this place wouldn't exist . . . so I resolve to thank them all more frequently !

Thanks to @Icingsugarkeks (you'll see her latest animated banner sensation on the site right now), @Aproned Artist (for her magical tutorials), @Manu biscotti decorati (for juggling both our challenges and her wonderful Made by Manu tutorial series), and @LisaF (for making these Spotlights happen with such personality and more guaranteed frequency)!

I thank you for the thank-you, and also for participating so beautifully on this site! Your cookies this week were especially stunning! Congrats on the cover image!

P.S. While I have many Polish relatives, I read and understand absolutely no Polish, so I always end up translating your posts and clip titles. I hope you don't mind me doing the latter, but I am always eager to know what you are saying! And once I find out, I like to post the translation for other English-speakers who might be eager to know as well. ❤️

Complete trust - thank you again! (The bird flapping its wings in this month's banner is a true delight, thanks to you and @mintlemonade (cookie crumbs)!)

Thank you for your kind words, dear Julia. I have nothing against it of course, you can do whatever you want with my statements. I know a little English and understand a lot, but I also use translation. It's nice that you have Polish roots and relatives in Poland. Maybe it's worth visiting my country? Hugs and best regards 😍❤️

It would be great to visit - maybe 2024 will bring me that good fortune! (Fingers crossed!)
