The New JULIA Airbrush System Is (Finally) Here!

The last several months leading up to this release have been a lot like the road trip my family took each summer to get to our vacation spot in Maine. Every few minutes, a chorus of kids would ring out from the back seat, asking my Dad, "Are we there yet?!" When he shook his head "no", we'd sound off in unison with the predictable refrain, "How much longer?!" It was a 9-hour drive from Connecticut to Maine, and, for my sibs and me, that was an interminable amount of time to be penned up in the car with each other, especially when we were bursting with excitement about the vacation that lay ahead.

And so it was with this release. It was extremely difficult for me to keep a lid on my new airbrush system for as long as I did. Soon after Ken Schlotfeldt, CEO of Badger Air-Brush Co., asked if I'd be interested in partnering with him, which was over a year ago, the initial design began to take shape. And, ever since then, I've been bursting with excitement too. You see, I knew early on that certain features of this system were going to revolutionize airbrushing for many of you.

But, there were other important details to work out before the system could be released - pricing, packaging, instructions, and distributor relationships, to name a few! It's not enough to have a great product; all of the other elements that define the customer experience have to be as wonderful as possible too! So, long story short, "Are we there yet?" became a familiar tune sung by both me and Ken over the last few months. Likewise, I received a lot of eager "How much longer?"s from many of you!  I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for sticking with me and waiting so patiently. I sincerely believe this system will be worth your wait. Also, a HUGE thank you to my partner Badger Air-Brush Co. for working so tirelessly with me over the last year to turn this dream into a reality!

Before I tell you why this system is so special, let me first tell you what it contains and where you can purchase it.

System contents:
  • JULIA dual-action airbrush (105-JU) with quick-connect adaptor (51-038) and barbed fitting (50-026)
  • 5-foot clear quick-connect air hose with inline air regulator (JU-5018)
  • JULIA on-demand air compressor, 43 psi maximum operating pressure and both 110/220V options (JU-180)

Where to get the JULIA: We're launching on my stencil partner Confection Couture Stencils' site, but we'll be expanding our distribution to more sites in the coming months. Please note that Confection Couture will ship anywhere (though check with them, not me, for shipping estimates, especially outside of the US). However, they only have 110V systems/compressors available at this time; 220V systems/compressors will be coming soon to another site. Confection Couture is also selling the airbrush separately from the compressor*.

* Important note about compressors: The JULIA airbrush has been specially configured and tested with the JULIA compressor to ensure optimum system performance, and so I strongly encourage you to get my full system. Because the JULIA airbrush has a dual-action trigger, which doesn’t release air unless depressed, it is best used with an on-demand compressor (like the JULIA compressor) as opposed to a continuous-flow compressor (which pushes out air constantly). The JULIA airbrush will work with either type of compressor, and comes with fittings to adapt to either type, but a continuous-flow compressor is more likely to overheat with heavy use.

Now, why is the JULIA system so special? In short, it's a dual-action airbrush, which inherently offers more control than the single-action airbrushes currently marketed for cookie decorating. It also resolves many of the typical headaches often involved with other airbrushes - overspray, speckled spray, and clogging with white and metallic colorings. You won't experience any of these things if you handle and maintain your JULIA airbrush system properly. What's more, routine cleaning of the airbrush can be done entirely from the outside, without taking anything apart. But, best of all, the system comes with a lifetime labor warranty from my partner Badger Air-Brush Co.

Let's look more closely at the JULIA airbrush (just the "gun", if you will).

JULIA Airbrush

I've summarized the key airbrush features in bullet-point format below, but, if you're more the visual type, please check out this video that explores ten key JULIA airbrush features, as well as essential dual-action airbrush operating tips:

Key airbrush features:
1. Dual-action (vs. typical single-action) trigger, for better control and fewer spraying mishaps
2. Finer spray, due to smaller needle tip
3. Less overspray, due to small (0.3 mm) nozzle opening
4. Works well with all mediums, including white and metallic food colorings, due to unique nozzle configuration
5. Large (1/4 oz/7 ml) coloring cup, for everything from small to large jobs
6. Easy-to-remove coloring cup cap, to avoid coloring spills
7. Quick-connect adaptor, to quickly and easily swap in different airbrushes
8. Easy to clean - minimal to no disassembly required! There is no airbrush simpler to clean - I guarantee!
9. No tools required after any initial disassembly
10. Ergonomic weighting toward nozzle end
11. Reversible nozzle guard for greater needle visibility or more needle protection – the choice is yours!

If you're in doubt about point 8 (ease of cleaning), you'll doubt no more once you watch this JULIA airbrush cleaning video:

And, last but not least, onto the too often overlooked compressor. It's a vital part of any system, as it's what supplies air to the airbrush. If a compressor doesn't deliver the air with enough force, as is typical with some smaller compressors, you're more likely to see speckled results. And, of course, you won't be able to quickly and uniformly cover larger products, like cakes. The maximum operating pressure of the JULIA is almost double that of most cookie compressors on the market, so you're always assured of having enough pressure for any job. Further, the air flow control is fully variable, allowing you optimum control for areas large and small!

JULIA Compressor

Key compressor features:
1. 43 psi maximum operating pressure - not just for small jobs!
2. On-demand activation, meaning it operates only when the airbrush trigger is depressed, which also means it's very quiet!
3. Fully variable air flow control, for everything from close-range detail work to broad coverage
4. Air flow controlled with an inline air regulator (dial), conveniently located on the air hose rather than the compressor
5. Clear air hose, to easily detect any moisture accumulation
6. Long (5-foot) air hose, for flexibility in setup
7. Convenient carrying handle

And that concludes my intro to my new JULIA airbrush system (barring my recap of key links below)! I hope you love my system as much as I loved designing it for you! If you have any airbrushing technique questions, please don't hesitate to ask me at any time. (Just email sweetlife@juliausher.com.) Service and warranty questions, however, should be directed to Badger Air-Brush Co. at CustomerService@BadgerAirBrush.com.

Again, thank you to my partner Badger Air-Brush Co. for making this product a possibility!

Thank you for reading to the end, and happy airbrushing!

Many well deserved congrats, Julia! The design and the features are impressive. I can’t even imagine the amount of work and all the details behind the launch of a new product. Knowing that you personally tested the system made worth the wait.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure the SOM discount was intended to work - you might want to call Confection Couture and check to make sure it gets applied.

However, they are already offering the system at a substantial discount off of the manufacturer's suggested retail price. They typically don't apply discounts on top of discounts, so this may be why the system is not accepting your coupon code.

Thanks so much. Yes, I've been working on it for over a year and a half. It's been a tremendous amount of work, but I hope it will make people's airbrushing lives easier.

Bet this was a challenging and interesting project to do - especially when it takes so long. But it looks and sounds like a great new tool!

Thanks! Yes, VERY challenging to say the least. Glad to have it launched!

Confirmed with them - they cannot discount on top of the already large discount. They are adding a clarification of this to the site. No, not much sleep these days - it is a very difficult time for me right now with many competing demands on my time.

This is exactly what I thought when I purchased mine last night. It's a really good price for the kind of system you've designed with Badger (a true quality brand name for airbrush systems). This will be a big step up from my current airbrush system .

Many, many congratulations @Julia M. Usher for all you've done to bring this amazing system to us!! I'm SO excited at the prospect of maintaining the gun without needing to take it apart to clean it once a week . Plus, I do the exact same maintenance steps you discuss in your video with my current gun and still feel the need to disassemble it for a thorough cleaning.

Thanks for buying my system, Carol. I really hope you enjoy it! What kind of gun do you currently have, and why do you think you have to dismantle it to thoroughly clean it (after doing the routine steps)? Does it perform less well if you don't? Just curious.

I have an Ophir system. The gun is dual action and works fairly well although at times it continues to dispense color after I've lifted my finger off the trigger. Weird...You hit the nail on the head about the performance of the gun if I don't disassemble and thoroughly clean it regularly. It loses the smooth flow of color pretty quickly.  (This  is the reason why I started doing a more thorough cleaning between color changes and disassemble it once a week as I use my airbrush quite often.) The gun doesn't do well with metallics and sheens as it clogs quickly. It's either the tiny particles in the metallic and sheen colors or the fact that these are a little more dense than other airbrush colors, particularly the metallics.

Hope answers any questions...if you're reading this at 10:30 pm AZ time then it's time to go to bed and rest . (Do I sound like a mother or what?! Lol)

It sounds like your airbrush has dried coloring in it that is preventing the needle from being fully seated in the forward position (and thus closing off the opening to prevent spray). It also sounds like perhaps the trigger is not actually fully releasing, as you should have no airflow on a dual-action gun if you haven't depressed the trigger. Are you sure it's dual-action? This type of trouble is more indicative of a single-action gun that is partially plugged with the needle in an open position (as first described). (Yes, still working on site stuff - I work a full day in the kitchen; then typically another "day" from about 6 or 7 pm until 12 to 3 am in order to handle all my email and admin work for classes, products and so on. It's rough.)

Congrats, Julia -- you KNOW I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of your new system. Definitely an achievement for you. I watched the videos, and really am impressed with the amount of thinking that went into the whole thing.

Cheers!!

Great! Though it might sound like a statement of the obvious, do read all of the instructions first. The compressor, in particular, does not work like most on the market. It is on-demand, not continuous flow (though it does make periodic cycling noises, which is normal). The air flow is also not controlled on the compressor, but through a valve on the hose. That valve needs to be open (to different degrees) depending on the application and medium (regular coloring or metallics) you are using. (Just pointing out stuff that generated a few questions last week.)

I don't have a compressor and flow regulation video yet (I'm working on it), but the written instructions that come with the system are very extensive. There is a mini booklet for the airbrush alone, as well as smaller instructions on system setup and the compressor operation itself.

There was good information in the video, but I was so tired I’m not retaining the information.  Then reading the enclosed information will be helpful.  I’m looking forward to your video.

I’ve read all the literature and looked at your videos again but two things still confuse me.  First, where is the gun rest?  Second, I got this plastic circle that says PTFE thread seal tape.  What do I use it for?  Thanks!

There is no gun holder. I opted not to include one, as I find most are precarious holders at best - it's easy for the gun to fall out of them. Most are also integrated into the compressor, which isn't convenient, since it's best to keep your compressor away from your work area (due to vibrations). But, most importantly, you don't need one. If the gun is capped, it lays on the counter and is much safer there than perched in a holder. If you want a separate holder, they will be available soon on bakeryairbrush.com, but I personally don't use one (for all the reasons mentioned) and thus did not want it on the system.

The white ring is teflon plumber's tape (as indicated in the instructions; see screen shots below from the Compressor Information Sheet that came with the compressor). You use it to wrap around threads at connections to give you the tightest seal.

Thanks for explaining and so quickly.  I’ve seen holders made from sponges.  She cut out a portion of the sponge.  Maybe I’ll go to the dollar store and buy some sponges and try it.  You are right that it’s not necessary if you use your cap.  I will be finally playing with my airbrush tonight!

Great! I'm not sure you'll need the sponge - you can literally shake the gun and turn it upside down with coloring in it and the cap on, and nothing comes out. But the sponge is a clever idea! Email me (sweetlife@juliausher.com) if you have further questions about the system.

Thanks! No, I have no immediate plans for release of a 220V system, unfortunately. Since this post, we've decided to stay focused for the time being on US distribution with 110V systems.
