Happy 1st Birthday Giveaway!

It's hard to pinpoint the exact birthday of this (my beloved) site. It launched "softly" into cyberspace in Spring 2013 with different people getting introduced to it at various stages of development.

About a month before I announced its birth on Facebook, a small cadre* of members were already testing the site's various features and functionality while I was furiously adding content so it wouldn't be naked upon official arrival. (Naked might be normal for most babies, but it wasn't acceptable for this one!) A month or so before that, the lovely Jaci Baynes Harper of Ali's Sweet Tooth was the one who gave me the idea and encouragement to start this community. It took some coaxing, but she eventually convinced me!  She looked at early versions of the site, provided input on possible names, and also joined the team doing the early testing. Around this same time, Elizabeth Watt of Pretty Sweet Designs stepped in to offer advice on my color and font choices and to work on banners, backgrounds, and other necessary graphics. I am deeply indebted to all of these people; for without them, Cookie Connection would have never come into being.

While the history is a little fuzzy, I do know this: it was a quick gestation period (no more than two months). Testing on the site was still underway at the end of May and into early June 2013, and one of my first official welcome posts on the site was dated June 7.

That said, I'm splitting the difference and declaring June 1, 2013 as Cookie Connection's official birthday! I hope you'll celebrate with me by taking part in this giveaway!

(Another great graphic by Pretty Sweet Designs, BTW!)

In one short year, we've grown to over 3,700 members (from nearly 50 countries)! We've brought on six (now five) incredible contributors, and we're experiencing an average of about 1.4 million views per month. What's more, some amazing sponsors, including Designer Stencils, Fancy Flours, BRP Box Shop, The Classic Cookie Cutter, and Craftsy, have consistently supported us along the way.

But more important than any of these numbers are the warmth, energy, and wonderful artistry that members of this community share so generously with one another each day. It's been immensely gratifying to see the world of cookie decorating come closer together and to get to know many of you through your cookies and comments on this site. Thank you, everyone, for making this year one of the most rewarding ones that my sieve-like brain can remember!  I look forward to many more years of cookie fun together!

Enough waxing poetic about the site's birthday . . . about that giveaway!

There is so much great info here already, it's hard to imagine what more one could want.  I think a board or column specifically on equipment -- maybe reviews, technique, etc.  There's a lot available out there and some good collective thinking could help us all make better, more well-informed choices.

Congratulations on CC's birthday -- LOVE IT!!

I do not you but i could love an app. I love reading the post an admiring the greaters decorators but I could use an mobile app

This site is already available on mobile devices, if that's what you're asking? Is it? If so, here's more info about how to access and interface with the site on those devices: http://cookieconnection.juliau...n-on-a-mobile-device ~JMU (P.S. Shameless self promotion: I also have a cookie decorating app that's available for sale here: http://www.papertrell.com/apps...ers_Ultimate_Cookies)

Happy Birthday CC.

I am a brand new member, so I have to explore more the page. But I have seen so many extraordinary examples in your facebook page, Julia, that I feel completely satisfy. And I also feel so much respect for your work, that I think I am not able to say anything else but thank you very much for sharing.

I like to find collections of cookies, techniques and tutorials.

And now, my very personal thought is that a there are so many good values involved in cookies decorating, such as the ability to wait, the patience, the effort that is necessary to achieve a goal, the beauty against the violence that I would really like to read about more stories of how people are contributing to change society by sharing what they know about cookies decorating or directly their work with other people (social responsibility stories). Thank you again.

Hard to say... I'd love to see more of your tutorials. Oh oh oh... I got it!!! I'd DIE to see a promise that you will visit my country and give a class or two here  Now, how 'bout that??

OK, so where are you located? I'll see if I can make a commitment to that! ~JMU

Buon compleanno Cookie Connection!! Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!!! I love this site where there is sharing so many beautiful and original works. I hope to see more tutorials and video on advanced level. Thank you!!

E come si dice in Italia "Cento di questi giorni"!!! <3

Happy First Birthday!!!
I love the site!
Hope for 2015 a cookie Con in Europa! Lots of hugs from The Netherlands!!

Thanks! Again, just to clarify, Cookie Connection is not related to CookieCon, which is organized by Karen and Mike Summers. I don't anticipate getting into the event organization business in 2015!  ~JMU

I have been so inspired by all I have seen here that I would like you just to keep going with whatever inspires you.  The colours, designs and descriptions and tutorials are brilliant.  I love it all.

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection....hard to believe it's been a year....so many wonderful cookie creations.  I'd love to see more step by step tutorials.  Some of us just aren't as creative as others and we need a bit more help understanding how some techniques are achieved.

I am brand new to Cookie Connection but it looks fabulous, congratulations and Happy Birthday!  I am very much looking forward to participating in a future Practice Bakes Perfect Challenge - it is definitely helpful to see picture and video tutorials when learning new techniques, but making yourself step out of your comfort zone to try new things personally is a great idea.  Thank you!

Happy first birthday!

I really enjoy the site, although I don't visit often.  Too too too tempting to make a plethora of cookies after I get done drooling over the cookies shown!

I'd love to see some tips on using icing that's not RI.  I've been using glaze recently, and while it's not as crisp in appearance as RI, the taste makes up for that in spades!  I'd love to learn more about glaze or any other icing that can be used.

Again, happy birthday!

Dear Julia (& all those others behind the scene),

The CC was what jumpstarted my confidence in making cookies (or biscuits as we call them here). Being featured (twice) very early into my membership gave me SO much confidence - & I think kudos in my non-sweet-eating husband's eyes.

Like a lot of the comments before:

1. Perhaps city (or country) wide cookie get-togethers; esp for us outside the USA

2. Cookiers talking about their businesses - what worked/what didn't

3. But above all else, keep doing what you're doing currently, because it's obviously working

Kristine

Happy Birthday! This site was one of the best things that I could have found when I first started making cookies. I love everything about it, especially the ability to share with so many and the great support everyone gives each other. Just keep up the great work.

i hope you see many more Birthdays in the years ahead.

This is such a great site and I don't visit here nearly enough.  I wish I had more time to browse every corner of it!  The most helpful things for me on the site are tutorials - picture and/or video.  That sort of thing gets your own mind churning with ideas!  And, of course, someone sharing a new and/or innovative way to do something.

So, more tutorials.  Maybe a tab at the top where all tutorials are listed underneath.

You've done a beautiful job with this site, Julia!  Thank you for all your hard work!

I think what I love the most about your page is the progression.  I've been decorating cakes for over 20 years and most tutorials and classes are either too beginner, or I've already taken them.  Thank you for bringing new ideas and great tips for perfecting skills to keep my skills from becoming stagnant.

Love being a member!  I would love to see CookieCon come out to the mid-Atlantic area!!  Love cookie-ing it up out here too!

Great idea, but as clarification: CookieCon is completely separate from Cookie Connection; this site has nothing to do with organizing that event. That event is organized and run by Karen and Mike Summers of Karen's Cookies. ~JMU

I don't visit here often enough at all. I love all the information that one can gain from this site. Thanks for putting it together for us. I'd like to see something about coloring RI. How to achieve the "odd" colors so to speak. How to get a true black, red and blues n purples. Hard to achieve colors also.

Happy 1st Birthday!  I would like to see tutorials on more intricate designs as well.  New techniques, tricks of the trade and  "cookie-ing on a budget" -- maybe an area of the forum dedicated to members posting current discounts and sales for supplies.

Hi, Kim - Your ideas for tutorials are consistent with others I've been hearing, and we will be working on that. As far as a forum for discounts, etc., there is already one where I post these sorts of things quite often (and encourage members to do the same). I usually post them under the Suppliers forum, as you can see here: https://cookieconnection.juliausher.com/forum/suppliers Check it out, and please post any sales you're aware of there as well, as long as they're not already posted. ~JMU

Rough Translation:

To be noted that only yesterday I discovered this site and I am grateful because I can learn many things from people professional
My request is to understand through video tutorials for those approaching or just to decorate cookies, what are the steps to follow to learn how to decorate a path starting with the type, beginner, intermediate and advanced .... a bit like the location of the school you begin with the basics and then move to higher levels ........ thanks ..... PS I am thrilled when I can see you in Italy
